How Adhesives and Sealants Function
Sika's adhesives and sealants are working materials which show good affinity for other surfaces. Their task is to flow like a liquid onto and into the contours of a surface and then transform themselves into a solid, by developing both a physical and a chemical bond with the substrate.

Sika Marine Adhesives and Sealant Systems can range from fluid liquids to heavy thixotropic paste-like systems, able to supply low-to-high-strength values and cure to a highly elastic or rigid bond. |
Development of a bond by drying off of the adhesive;
 Loss of solvent or moisture from surfaces and through porous subtrates;

Development of a bond by application of a hot, molten adhesive and leaving it to cool down;
 A molten adhesive is formed to a joint, held place and left to cool and solidify;

Development of a bond based on a two-component metered/mixed adhesive, as an example for a chemical reaction;
 Two reactive adhesive elements are mixed, formed to a joint and held in place until handling strength is reached; e.g. two-component epoxy resin or two-component polyurethane system.

Development of a bond based on a one-component humidity-curing reaction, as another example for a chemical reaction.
 One-component moisture-reactive adhesive, formed to a joint, until sufficient handling strength is reached; e.g. Sikaflex® one-component polyurethane system.
